Tucson is a great little city to visit. Tucson is sunny 350 days a year so there is nothing to hinder the hiking and any other fun you would like to have. You have your choice of spas, horseback riding, a day at the museum or the opportunity to spend the day selecting from a number of mini hikes all around the area. The hiking trails are plentiful and cover a wide range of terrain and vegetation, wildlife and spectacular views. Posted with this blog are some photos of recent hikes that I have taken in the last couple of weeks. When planning your next hiking trip you could do worse than visiting Tucson.

Arizona Statehood came on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1912 – coincidentally, exactly 50 years after the Confederates had first declared Arizona a territory. Movie cameras recorded President Taft signing the proclamation, the first time this technology had ever chronicled such an event.

"Snow Tubing in the Rockies"

What a beautiful day it was for enjoying the Colorado outdoors. Temperature was in the 50's and it was a perfect day for experiencing snow tubing on historic Howelson Hill in Fraser, Colorado.

If you think snow tubing is only for kids, please think again! There I was, going down a 100 yard plus hill with heart pounding and snow flying. At the end of each run, tubers were conveniently pulled back up the hill with a rope tow. Here are a few photos taken of our special day!

This afternoon, my son brought us to a gym to experience indoor rock climbing. While not climbing myself, several great photos were captured of the grand kids climbing, and even a good shot of my son on the ceiling, just like spider man. From what I could observe rock climbing is great for cardiovascular health, muscle strength and flexibility.

This evening we had opportunity to try liquid nitrogen ice cream here in Denver at at a local creamery called 'The Crushery', which offered a choice of over 10,000 flavors including vegan, sugar free, yogurt and shakes made to order. Part of process and the charm was the adding of liquid nitrogen,which made a quick freeze of the ice cream. For me, vanilla ice cream with carmel syrup, pistachio, sea salt and toffee really hit the spot.

"Red Rocks of Morrison"

Looking out from my son's deck reveals many of the beautiful and prominent red rocks just west of Denver. The Red Rocks of this area represent a unique transition between the Great Plains and the Rocky mountains.

Besides a beautiful Red Rock Amphitheater in the area, the Red Rocks provide many ways for both locals and tourists to enjoy amazing Colorado. There you will find miles of hiking paths, biking trails as well as many picturesque picnic areas.

With the snows halting this afternoon, we all took the opportunity to go hiking including Baby Bella. Here are some of the photos we took as we went out from Chad's back deck, along the 14th fairway, and up into the foothills.

This evening, we'll be experiencing liquid nitrogen ice cream at the Crushery, rock climbing on Saturday, and tubing on Sunday.

Flew into Denver last evening with Desert Princess and Piano Man to visit my son's family , and their now nine month old, Baby Bella. This was also an opportunity to visit my son's new home in Morrison near the Red Rocks. Our son's home is on the 14th Fairway of the Red Rocks Country Club. This morning we woke up to a beautiful snow fall and flocks or Canadian Geese. The grand kids meanwhile took the opportunity with their grandfather to take a hike and to make snow angels on the 14th green.

This weekend we will have our Fifth Annual Beat Back Buffelgrass Day here in Tucson. Buggelgrass is an African species introduced into the United States in the 1900's to control erosion and feed cattle. Buffel grass is fast-growing, highly flammable and potentially devastating to the desert ecosystem. Since being introduced, Buffelgrass has spread over vast expanses of public land, taking over terrain needed by native species and providing fuel for raging fires.

This coming week, I'll be traveling to Denver with my daughter and her children to visit my son on his birthday, and his newly arrived baby daughter, Baby Bella. Bringing a few toys of course was something that her grandfather could not resist. Baby Bella is now 9 months, so that was my focus of attention in buying suitable toys that would encourage Baby Bella's physical development. Two of my favorites were the 'Crawl-Along Musical Ball and the 'Bounce and Giggle Pig'. With the 'Crawl-Along Musical Ball, it is all about the baby batting at the ball or rolling it across the floor as a monkey balances on top. With the 'Bounce and Giggle Pig', the baby presses its snout to start silly sounds and vibrating action and fun surprises.

Merry Christmas everyone! Well tomorrow will be Christmas Day, and I am already preparing tomorrow's Christmas dinner. Being Norwegian, I hardly know how to boil water, yet I try to be persistent and always try "to do my best", especially when my grandaughter, Desert Princess, tells me, "Never give Up Grandpa" and then adds to the challenge by pointing two of her fingers at her eyes saying, " I'm Watching You!"

This year a Prime Rib Dinner was the choice along with sauteed beans sprinkled with craisons, slivered walnuts, and slices of mandarin oranges. Then for a salad, an Italian caprese was selected, my daughter's favorite, consisting of sliced cherry tomatoes, topped with sliced kalamata olives, mozzarella cheese, and garnished with pine nuts and basil with a sprinkle of olive oil and garlic herb seasoning. Fresh cranberries have also been prepared with grated orange zest,and some orange juice, always one of my favorites.

The question now is how to have a good prime rib roast that is tasty, tender and favorable????? To be successful, my choice was a recipe taken from Foodrecipes.com which I will be following tomorrow morning. On the web site, there is a video showing every step.

The secret of this recipe is math. After keeping your roast out for six hours and bringing to room temperature plus adding a rub, it’s off to the big blast oven(500 degrees) to sear the surface of the meat, followed by very slow cooking with the oven off. The amount of time is determined by easy math, which is weight x 5 minutes. So my roast, which is 7.52 lbs, needs to be in the oven for 38 minutes at a temperature of 500 degrees. At that point, the oven is turned off, and is not opened, and the roast is timed for another 120 minutes. Then the roast is ready for serving. Please stay tuned for results!!!!!!

"Charlie's Manhattans and Grasshoppers for all of us"

In our family, everybody talked about my Dad's famous Manhattans, which today we fondly call Charlie's Manhattans. It was always a traditional drink during the holidays and one with a very special recipe which I have shared below. One word of caution, always stop at two, then stay home or have a designated driver. For the kids, and really for everyone else, Rich's Grasshoppers have always been a real delight. All one needs is a container of vanilla bean ice cream and blender and three to four ounces of creme de menthe. Oh so good!

Ingredients for Charlie's Manhattans:

1 1/2 oz Jim Bean Bourbon

1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth

1 Dash Bitters

Splash of Cherry Juice

Stir well with ice. Strain into cocktail glass Serve with Cherry

"Baby Bella needs some Attention"

Many of my postings have featured the four older grandchildren, Piano Man, Desert Princess, Baby Iris and Princess Petra. Just realized yesterday, that the youngest grandchild, Bella, who was born April 30th, had not received the press she so richly deserves, so this blog is dedicated to you, my Princess Bella.

Bella will soon be 8 months old and has grown up so much in the last couple of months. Despite her early start and being a "preemie", she has quickly caught up and is crawling all over to discover her environment. She not only love sitting up, but also prefers feeding herself, which can be a little messy, to say the least. Yikes! Like her parents, she already enjoys the out of doors, and can be calmed at any time by taking her outside. Josie, her canine sister, is quite protective and keeps good company close by until Bella starts to complain about something too loudly.

This past week, my house was discovered to have termites. Since that time, a number of termite exterminators have been invited out to propose a treatment plan. One company representative even drove up in a vehicle that appeared to be a termite. Quite cute in some ways, I must say!

Termites have been munching away on wood for over 250 million years, long before people started building their homes from wood products. Termites recycle wood products into soil by feeding on and breaking down cellulose, the main component of the cell walls in plants. My only question, is why did they pick my house?

There are of course many different types of termites. Here in Arizona, the most common is the subterranean termite, which build earthin shelter tubes, which can be up to an inch in width. These tubes are usually found on the outside just above the slab.

This week the local Arizona Daily Star had a coverage story on the general do's and don'ts for snowbirds and visitors coming to Arizona. So for those interested in becoming a Desert Dweller, here are some "Tips on Living like a Native" written by Kristen Cook and illustrated by David Fitzsimmons of the Arizona Daily Star.

During the summer heat, car temperatures can be brutal. This can be alleviated in part by having tinted windows, having a sun shade and having a remote starter for your air conditioning.

Avoid trying to catch lizards by hand if they are in your home as they have fracture plaines in their tails, so they break off easily. Use instead a broom to guide the little creature toward the door and outside.

Mark down the month of February for wearing boots. This month is the time of year is so special, so revered, that even schools are shut down. It is Rodeo time!
Prepare and drink sun tea for the hot days.

Down here in Arizona, it is quite easy to walk into a cactus thorn or spines, which can be quite a nuisance, and sometimes painful. Locals suggest using really sharp, fine tweezers or, good ol' white glue. Coat the area with glue and let it dry completely before peeling off. Another method, especially with cholla cactus is to flick off the cholla spine with a comb rather than by hand.

Avoid the sun in the peak hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., use at least SPF 30 and cover up with hats, sunglasses and tightly woven clothing that offers sun protection.

"Grandson 's letter to Santa"

This past week Piano Man wrote this special letter to Santa and took a moment to share his writing with both his mom and grandpa. Reading his letter brought both of us to reflect upon our own childhood, and the thoughts and visions we had during our own childhood years. Piano Man captured so much in the beauty of his words, that when asked, he consented to have them placed here on my blog for all to enjoy. Perhaps if we are especially quiet, we may also hear the the "Ho!" "Ho!" of jolly St. Nick and the hoofs of those most famous reindeer!

A Letter to the “One and Only” Santa Claus~

As myriads of Christmases pass by and time slows people’s lives, you still are living healthy and spreading your joy to not only the little kids, but the adults, too. You’re what makes this holiday come together, a fun tradition and belief that has broadened all over the world. You- with your rosy cheeks, bulging belly, long, scraggly, white beard, your brown, leather boots and belt, your red and white, fluffy outfit, and you with your big sack of toys and gifts to give to all the excellent young children- have spread incredible magic all to every single person on the earth that believes. There are so many books, children stories, music, and poems written about your generosity and kindness. And even you eating the cookies, drinking the milk, and feeding your reindeer carrots, have contributed to your fame. A big part of your reputation is when your slide down the chimney a slowly creep to the lighted and decorated Christmas tree and gently and quietly lay the wrapped presents on the skirt of the tree. This holiday would not be complete if it didn’t include you, your little helpers (elves), and reindeer.

As time passes by many have forgotten or don’t believe in you. That only means one thing; they have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. The true meaning of Christmas is not to get gifts or toys or even money, it is to embrace your family and the ones around you, to be kind to all, to be generous to others, and also to spread bliss. I still believe in you, Santa, and the elves and even the reindeer that fly as they guide your sleigh to every house in the world. I’ve, too, grown and learned that these figures are a representation of the true meaning of Christmas. Santa, to signify love, caring, joy, family, kindness, and most importantly, generosity. The Elves symbolizing the people that helped shape the idea of Christmas, the people that carried on the tradition to their kids, and the people that never forgot the true meaning of Christmas. And last but certainly not the least, are the reindeer (Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolf) that portray the liveliness of Christmas and the celebration and travel on Christmas. It is these three factors that make up the true meaning of Christmas. I want you to know that as long as I will live, I will NEVER forget the accurate meaning of Christmas.

"Wall of Gratitude and Remembrance"

Desert Princess is having a fantastic year in school this year. Much of the impetus and credit goes to her fifth grade teacher, Ms. Witte and her grade level team. They are quite an innovative group with the many learning activities and projects they think out and plan out for their students. One such project we attended today was called "Wall of Gratitude and Remembrance".

As part of the 5th grade curriculum, a wall is created in each fifth grade classroom to honor the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country in the armed forces. To see this wall is quite moving as each student recognizes an individual that has served in the armed forces and then posts photos and other items on this 'Wall of Gratitude and Remembrance'.

In Desert Princess's case this meant honoring her great grandfather, Commander Cyril Schaller who served our country during the second world war and in other theaters of action. What really made it special was that Great Grandfather attended and participated in this school event, and was able to share his medals, ribbons and commendations with Desert Princess's class.

How very special for our granddaughter to have this opportunity, to reflect on the contributions of others, and to be able to connect to the sacrifices of earlier generations.

"El Tour de Tucson"

What a beautiful Saturday we had today for the 29th annual El Tour de Tucson which is one of the largest road bicycling events in the United States. The El Tour de Tucson was started way back in 1983 and now takes place every November in Tucson, Arizona.

The first El Tour attracted nearly 185 riders while in recent years between 7,000 and 10,000 cyclists have attended. This year, approximately 8600 cyclists participated. In many ways, the El Tour is a family event with novice, intermediate, advanced and professional riders competing each year.

There are 109, 79, 66, and 40 mile courses as well as children's races of 6, 3 and 1/4mile races. The El Tour offers fun and cycling tests for all levels of riders. The route weaves through and around the city of Tucson, which is surrounded by 5 mountain ranges, three of which rise over 9,000 feet. The courses range from rolling to moderately hilly, with the 40 mile route being fairly flat and the perfect course for beginners.

The funds raised by the El Tour de Tucson cyclists support many charities including Tu Nidito Children & Family Services, the American Parkinson Disease Association, Water For People, Ben's Bells Project, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Diamond Children's Medical Center, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The El Tour of Tucson is really one of those great events that really helps to showcase Southern Arizona, and particularly beautiful Tucson.

"Our Little Angels"

Some photos one cannot pass by. Here is one of Baby Iris, now 2 1/2 that is just adorable. She is such a little sweetheart, and is always making statements to Grandpa like, "For goodness sakes!" "You betcha ya!" and "Grandpa, see my pretty dress!" There is also a picture of Baby Petra, her younger sister, now 9 months, and now motoring quite well around in her enviromnent.

Grandkids Love to Swim!

For the past three years, Piano Man and Desert Princess have participated on swimming teams both here in Tucson and now in the Chandler area of Phoenix. Being involved in competitive swimming has help both to improve not only their swim times, but also to experience the personal benefits that come from being a member of a team. With time, both have come to appreciate required practices, and are now quite enthusiastic as they steadily improve their times from meet to meet. Most important, however, is they love swimming, and are getting plenty of exercise.

What a beautiful evening for Halloween! A neighborhood pot luck was held prior to the children enjoying their opportunity of 'trick or treating' door to door. Brought back many nice memories. Especially fun to see the little ones, like my grandaughter, Baby Iris, actually joining in for the first time. As far as Piano Man and Desert Princess, the photos speak for themselves. Everyone had a great time, and grandpa even had some leftovers like Snicker bars and M & M peanuts, my favorite!

"Broken Racquet"

Ever since I was a young boy, playing tennis was always a favorite activity and with time became a very important part of my growing up years. As I move through high school and college, I participated in many tournaments, and won my share of championships. Tennis equipment, especially racquets evolved as the game of tennis changed, moving from traditional wood racquets, then metal to the composits we have today. During this time, I certainly broke my share of strings, even cracked some racquet heads, thus calling for racquet replacement. Never though, did I ever break a racquet as I did this evening as I was swinging for a volley. One minute I was making my move, and then the unexpected happen in mid stroke, my racquet handle separated from the head of my racquet. What remains is seen in my photo! In all my years, neither I nor my tennis buddies could recall seeing a racquet broken in quite this manner.

'Wedding weekend on Seneca Lake"

This weekend, my son and daughter in law, united our two families for a wedding celebration in upstate New York. We began our travels in Niagara Falls, then journeyed on to Senaca lake for the ceremonies. Seneca Lake is the largest of the glacier Finger Lakes in the state of New York,and the deepest lake within the state, reaching depths over 600 feet.

We stayed at a beautiful beach house on Seneca Lake, near Watkins Glen where the two families enjoyed many activities including excursions and the sampling of many wines. As you can see from the pictures, fall foilage has arrived.

"Spectacular Niagara Falls"

Today was spent viewing and experiencing Niagara Falls all from the Canadian Side. A journey to the falls on the famous "The Maid of the Mist" excursion brought us up front and personal with the excitement of the falls crashing below. Both "Piano Man and "Desert Princess" had a great time with their mom and afterward enjoyed walking around the town of Niagara with their grandpa. A favorite stop was the Hershey store and then getting a photograph next to a "Canadian Mountie."

Niagara Falls we were told is the second largest falls on the globe next to Victoria Falls in southern Africa. Here in Niagara there are actually several falls, the American falls is to the left in the first photo, then Horseshoe Falls and then to the far right, Niagara Falls. Next to the American Falls, there is also another falls called Bridal Falls.

The Niagara river, which forms the falls, drains water from four of the Upper Great Lakes-Michigan,Huron,Superior and Erie. These Great lakes actually constitute one fifth of the fresh water on our entire globe. All the outflow from these lakes empties into the Niagara river and eventually cascades over
the falls.

At the bottom of the falls, the water travels 15 miles over many gorges until it reaches the fifth Great Lake-Ontario. The land between the lakes does not slope at an even grade, but forms a spectacular drop approximately the same height as a 20 story building and this is known as the "Niagara Escarpment"

Wow! Four beautiful grandaughters and one very handsome grandson. How lucky could any grandfather be!! Their names, computer generated, from oldest to youngest are "Piano Man", "Desert Princess", "Baby Iris", "Princess Petra", and the most recent arrival, little precious "Baby Bella."

"What's on a stick at the Minnesota State Fair?"

Ever since I was a young lad, I've enjoyed my time at the Minnesota State Fair. This year was no exception. Best of all the weather was cool and much more bearable than most years.

Over the years, the Minnesota State Fair has had some changes in both attractions and venues offered fair visitors. The first fair was a territorial fair first held in 1859. It wasn't until the late 1880's that the Fair acquired a permanent site on 212 acres north of St. Paul.

The character of early fairs was dominated by agricultural exhibits and competitions, reflecting its original purpose of encouraging farming in the state. While agriculture is still the primary focus, the scope of activities has broadened to include large-scale entertainment features, technological and industrial exhibits and scores of education and government institutions.

While food has always been a focus at the fair, a recent trend is one of finding food that one can place "on a stick." Here I've documented a few of these. My favorite and most Minnesotean is the Norwegian hot dish on a stick!!!!

"Another Day of Adventure"

This past Tuesday, I arrived in Minneapolis to attend my niece's wedding and to get in some tennis playing with my now older tennis buddy, Jim. That's Jim in the tennis clothes holding up a tennis racquet. What is interesting and noteworthy about this trip is that my car broke down a second time. This time, however, we were "johnny on the spot" and jumped my vehicle and then headed out to buy a new battery. We were especially proud of the fact that we completed this unforeseen challenge in less than an hour and still had time to play some great tennis. The days are quite beautiful now in Minnesota.

"Michael Perry Memorial Marker in Tucson"

Recently a 35 acre park was completed in SE Tucson which includes little league fields, basketball courts along with picnic areas and playground. In addition to these facilities, there are also some special features such as a dog drinking fountain and an underground pipe where kids can use to whisper to one another.

There has been one problem with the new park, and that is VISIBILITY!!!! To answer this need a memorial marker has been created over the past two months through a $25,000 commission from the Tucson Pima Arts Council. Nine students, two artists and one project assistant have been building this new park marker at the corner of East Golf Links Road and South Pantano Parkway for the past several weeks, and are now about finished.

They're replacing a plain brown sign with a 7-foot-tall jackrabbit perched atop a 16-foot-long concrete baseball bat, a 52-inch-tall tortoise and an 8-foot-tall stack of metal blocks.

The animals were carved from large blocks of foam, which were then reinforced with a metal frame. A steel mesh was wrapped around the frame. The structures were sunk into the ground and covered in concrete.

Other parts of the marker drew inspiration from the park itself, which was named for a 12-year-old boy who was murdered in 1984. The group decided on a baseball bat because a Little League uses the park. The blocks were inspired by children's building blocks - each will be painted with a different letter, spelling out the word "park." The jackrabbit holds a basketball as a symbol of the park's basketball courts.

Included with my photos are ones of the whispering underground pipe and the the dog drinking station that are found within the park itself.

Earlier this month, Phoenix experienced a sandstorm that will certainly go into the record books. Near sunset on the 5th of July, Phoenix was enveloped in sandstorm that extended up 3500 feet and was 60 miles wide. In a matter of seconds, the sky became dark, visibility was impossible and in many areas communities were without power.

While it is not uncommon for the southwest to have sandstorms between May and September this storm was definitely exceptional as one can see from the photos taken by news organizations. Another name for this kind of storm is called "Haboob", which is an Arabic name. These kinds of storms are also quite common in Arabia, North Africa, and India. When this storm struck earlier this month, there was certainly a science fiction quality to the eeriness of this event.

Listening to the New Hampshire Republican Presidential Debate this past Monday evening, I was very disappointed in the way in which all seven presidential hopefuls addressed the recently passed Health Care Law. This Monday, June 13th, "Brush and Bulky" comes to my community and once again I have been working away, pruning branches, clearing out dead cacti, and gathering other sorted debris. Having three acres, there is no shortage of brush to clear out, but I do have a limiitation of 10 cubic yards. Judging from my photos, I'm afraid I've reached my limit!!

Today, I received my Shingles vaccination at my local pharmacy. In taking this step, I consulted with my doctor and read all the literature. Here is what I know about Shingles. Perhaps you'll find this information of benefit if you are currently over 60 or near that age.

What is Shingles?

Shingles is a very painful condition that is caused by the same virus that caused chickenpox back when we were little guys. Shingles appears as a rash that quickly turns into blisters filled with fluid. This rash is typically painful, very sensitive to touch, and can last a few days to a few weeks. However, the pain associated with this rash can continue for weeks to years after the rash disappears. In some severe cases, even eyesight can be affected, if the blisters and rashes occur in that area.

According to my doctor, almost everyone over the age of 60 should receive this vaccine. The vaccine decreases the risk of the shingles and severity of the symptoms if you do get the shingles.

Almost every evening there are beautiful sunsets here in Arizona. With the house sitting up on a hill, mountains are seen in every direction. While the reds, yellows and oranges are uniquely arranged each evening in variety of shapes and evenings with and without clouds, last night an extra surprise was provided. There on the side of my house perched above the bedroom window were three little great horn owls, one of the largest in Northern America as one can see from the photos above.

Ever since re-locating from Minnesota, I have been a member of the La Mariposa tennis club which is located on the east side of Tucson. Over time many of the courts at our club had deteriorated and were clearly in need of repair, at least resurfacing if not total removal and re-construction of replacement courts.

When I arrived for mens evening doubles on Tuesday evening this week, all of us was were pleasantly surprised to find a bulldozer occupying court one. To a person, the message was very clear, our tennis club owners had secured financing and were now moving ahead with the rebuilding of our nine courts and improving our tennis facility.

In the posted photos, one can see the beginning of this process as well as other pictures of the picturesque grounds at La Mariposa, where many functions are held, especially weddings and the exchanging of vows.

What a great development this has been! As an avid tennis player, I am so pleased that our club had the fortitude to secure the resources to move forward with this project. While it was the right decision, however knowing the economy, it was not easy. My hat is off to the owners and congratulations are much in order. It is so good to know that tennis will play a role in the future of La Mariposa.

A week ago this past Sunday, our son and his wife welcomed their first child, a beautiful baby girl, who arrived three weeks early and weighed a petite 5 lbs 12 ounces. Once home, they soon discovered an almost immediate bond between their dog Josie and the newborn, who the parents have given a computer name of Princess Pignoli, a sweet Italian cookie, that upon taste is one step from heaven. It appears that Josie's maternal instincts kicked in right away and she is very protective and is licking her sweet new companion all the time.

In northeast of Scottsdale, Arizona there is a living memorial to a great American architect. Nestled in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains and surrounded by the spectacular Sonoran Desert lays a sprawling 600 acre complex called Taliesin West. It was designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright and is a National Historic Landmark. As an architect, he longed to be freed from the existing architecture designs and materials, and instead to do site specific construction where form and function were one. When one looks at the Taliesin complex, one quickly sees how Frank Lloyd Wright combined nature into the design of his construction. Looking closely at the photos, one can see an up close photo of the use of local rock and then see how it was incorporated into the different buildings. Also notice how the buildings become one with the backdrop of the hill behind. Today, the Taliesin West site is open to tours and also hosts a school of architecture that was founded in 1932. In addition, Taliesin West also houses the archives of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Have you noticed how young children are so fascinated with Butterflies, many adults too? Butterflies belong to that order of insects called lepidoptera or scaled-winged insects. These insect beauties have a world of fascinating attributes. The first, is their life cycle which is called metamorphosis and the second is their notable mass migrations each year.

Butterflies, in the eyes of some, are the most attractive and aesthetically pleasing of insects. Some associate butterflies with things that are gentle like icons of peace, delicate flower petals, or reverent classical music.

Nevertheless, butterflies are anything but fragile, but are inherently resilient due to incredibly reproductive capabilities coupled with adaptive self-defense mechanisms such as mimicry, camouflage, and their large population size. Only the destruction of their habitat is a concern for their long-term viability and welfare.

The Sonoran Desert covers over 5000 square miles in Arizona and Northern Mexico. The Sonoran is rich in plant and animal live and is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Many people who have never seen the desert in bloom have no idea that cactus plants actually create flower blooms. And there are a variety of blooming cactus plants which are quite beautiful. There are a wide variety of blooming cactus plants, and just as wide a variety of how and when they each bloom. Many blooming cactus will only show flowers for a brief period of time in February for instance, while others will only open their blooms in the middle of the night. Still others will not bloom till the hottest months of July or August. A good place to see these cacti on display is at the Botanical Gardens in Tucson and the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix.

Captured in these photos is a small selection of these cacti including the many wild flowers that bloom in the spring.

I'm sure that all of us have had a person or two in our life that we would consider special because of the influence and impact. Benjamin M. Lewis, is one such person, who certainly had a great impact upon my life and many of my fellow tennis team members. We all attended Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota during the years 1960-65 and all came to affectionately love and respect this man. Many of us called him "Doc" to his face, but behind the scenes, many of us referred to "Doc" as "the Wizard," because many tennis fortunes, records and championships came our way. For us "Doc" was a reserved, dignified man who always demonstrated the qualities of honesty and integrity and he etimoinze sportsmanship as our coach. As my good friend, Bruce McKinnon, who is in the above picture, noted,

"Ben was clearly a man of academic accomplishment and always conducted himself in a professional manner. While seemingly quiet and laid back, he was articulate and demonstrated sensitivity coupled with a disarming sense of humor. He consistantly showed great wisdom and leadership (by example and action). He genuinly cared about each team member regardless of player rank. Dr. Lewis was respected and admired by every member of his tennis teams without reservation. He was clearly a man of unquestionable character and a genuinely first class human being."

"In his coaching Ben combined the perfect mix of organization, structure, quiet motivation and knowledge of the game of tennis as our coach. He was deeply involved in the success of his men – as individuals, students, players and most of all – as a team. Consequently, his players worked hard to be good representatives for Hamline, the sport and the team -- given the very nature of Ben’s example. While VERY knowledgeable of the mechanics of the sport (he was also a good tennis player), his coaching focused on supporting his players in a watchful and quiet way. When Dr Lewis occasionally made comments about a players tennis skills (or lack there of), his observations were always perceptive and articulated in a thoughtful and positive context (or humorous at just the right moment -- one of his uncanny strengths)."

Dr. Benjamin Lewis truly made an impact on all of us while at Hamline, and that impact has lasted a lifetime. Thanks "Doc" for everything. "We love you."

Freezing Temperatures hit Southern Arizona!

On February 4th, Tucson had some of the lowest temperatures on record, even down to single digits in the evening, lasting over three nights. According to reports, these temperatures and their length were the coldest temperatures on record in 101 years. Now there is a record, if I have ever heard one!!

These very cold temperatures were so severe that pipes ruptured, fountains froze, crops died and sensitive vegatation like my cacti came to be casualites. Here are some photos which I took today in my yard.

Today, was one of those most special days. On this Valentines Day 2011, our son Chad and his lovely bride Gina exchanged wedding vows on a mountaintop at the Loveland ski resort in Colorado. The mountain views were beautiful, the temperatures were in the high 30's and the prenuptial comments by the minister were both thought provoking and meaningful for the occasion. Afterwards, we all enjoyed a an outdoor reception complete with cake, sparkling cider and a dance contest, which Chad and Gina won, but were no doubt the best, given the decibel rating of the cheers. Their special prize was threefold, a honeymoon getaway, special dining and future lift tickets. Best of all, their dance moves were all captured on my video camera.

"Astronomy Capital of the World"

With clear skies and the absence of lights plus a low light ordinance, Tucson in many ways is the Astronomy capital of the world. In many ways, Arizona has had a long love affair with astronomy that goes back to native cultures and even with ancient peoples like the Anasazi who have left many pictographs with astronomical themes.

Surrounding Tucson, is a plethora of observatories located on different mountain peaks like Mount Lemmon, Mount Bigelow, and Mount Grahm. Probably the most well known is the Kitt observatory located 56 miles southwest of Tucson in the Schuk Toak District on the Tohono O'odham Nation.

Kitt Peak National Observatory, is part of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, and supports the most diverse collection of astronomical observatories on Earth for nighttime optical and infrared astronomy and daytime study of the Sun.

With the low light ordinance in Tucson, the night skies near my home are very clear during the evenings. As a result, shooting stars and even space stations are quite prominent as they move across the sky.

After an absence of many years, I'll be returning to the ski slopes to attend my son's wedding on Valentines Day at the Loveland ski area in Colorado. Today, was spent gathering the necessary ski clothing and ski gear for this event. Now that I feel prepared, I'm ready to return to my skiing days of yesteryear. Luckily, the temperatures will be mild.

My son Chad and his bride to be, Gina will be taking their wedding vows this Valentines Day on the ski slopes just outside Loveland, Colorado in a event called "Mountaintop Matrimony". This is actually the 20th year of this event.

The Mountaintop Wedding is for couples getting married or renewing their vows and takes place at 12 noon on Valentines day each year at an elevation of 12,500 feet. The ceremony is a "mass wedding" done for all couples at the same time and lasts approximately 30 minutes. At the conclusion of the ceremony, all participants and guests will ski or snowboard down the mountain for a casual after party with cake, music and prizes.

In addition to this popular activity, the city of Loveland, which is known as the "Sweetheart City", also has a Valentine Re-mailing program, which is in its 65th year. Each year, people around the United States send valentines to Loveland so that they can be re mailed with a special cachet four line verse stamped on each envelope. The message is always one of love and hope to the world and a contest is held each year to select a new verse.

Now, I must be off to buy some ski clothing!!!!!

Baby Princess Petra arrived to meet the world this morning weighing in at slightly over eight pounds. Her older baby sister of 21 months, Baby Iris, didn't quite know what to think. What an exciting moment for her mom and dad, brother and sisters, grandparents and great grandparents. When you think about it, a baby is the beginning of all things, wonder, hope and a dream of possibilities. One particular poem about little baby girls is especially fitting I believe,

Take a sprinkling of fairy dust,
An angel's single feather,
Also a dash of love and care,
Then mix them both together.
Add a sentiment or two,

Fifty years ago on January 21st, 1961, President Kennedy delivered his well remembered Inaugural Speech. His words,"Ask not what America can do for you-ask what you can do for your country." inspired many of my generation to be active in public affairs and committed to helping others both here and abroad. One program that was created out of this vision was what we came to know as the Peace Corps

The founding director of the Peace Corp was Sargent Shriver, who died earlier this week at the age of 95. According to those who knew him well, Sargent Shriver dedicated his life to helping others and bringing out the best in us in accomplishing that effort. As he once said, "Learn more about others — know their hopes and dreams, find out what makes them smile and what makes them weep." Through his efforts, millions of people around the world were helped by the programs he spearheaded, not only the Peace Corps, but also the War on Poverty during the 90's. In the end, he made a great difference in the lives of millions. Perhaps today, in light of the Tucson tragedy, the words of both these great men, carry meaning to this day.

Baby Iris continues to amaze. Sometimes, I am absolutely convinced she is a "tech baby" . Two times this past weekend, I found my dear "Baby Iris", punching in numbers on my cell phone. If that wasn't enough, she also obtained my car keys, and what alot of noise she created with my car alarm!

As you can see, Baby Iris really has initiative, and with that a real mind of her own, or is that the "terrible twos" approaching.

It has been no secret that she likes the water, whether outside or in the bathtub. Another area she feels really strong about, is trying to go potty by herself.

In one of my photos, you'll see a potty chair intact, and then another photo showing the three parts. Well, Baby Iris does not like to sit, so she separates the sitting portion and the cup. What remains is only the basin, which Baby Iris is perfectly at home standing in and doing her potty business. I wonder how long this will last? Our dear "Baby Iris" continues to surprise and amaze, and to think she'll soon have a baby sister with whom she can share her discoveries.

Yesterday on Martin Luther King's birthday, I brought my grandchildren, ages 9 and 11for a visit to one of the four ever-growing shrines that have sprung up around Tucson since the tragic happenings of last week. The memorial shrine which my grandchildren visited is on the front lawn of the University of Arizona Medical Center, where congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords continues to recover.

While there, both of my grandchildren experienced the many expressions of a mourning community. They viewed and reflected upon the many tributes community members young and old had left, including the bearing of flowers, personal notes, balloons, stuffed animals and many votive candles. They also experienced people praying, crying, and finding comfort in each other. Prior to our departure, both of my grandchildren took time to write their own personal message, which can be seen in one of my photos. The rest of the photos, I believe need no further narrative.

Memorials have sprung up throughout Tucson in wake of the deadly shooting this past Saturday. One such memorial is on the front lawn of the University Medical Center, which I visited yesterday. This is the hospital where most of the victims were taken, and where congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords continues her personal fight to recover. While there, I saw so many tributes, many were presented in a myriad of ways, from notes to letters, to balloons, to pictures, to prayer vases to teddy bears,.... The outpouring of emotion and grief and sadness was so real, and so apparent on the faces of the throngs of people visiting, both young and old. What I saw was a sense of community among Tucsonians as they extended kindnesses to one another and spoke to complete strangers like neighbors. Upon leaving the memorial, I had a sense that all will be good, and while our community will never forget the good people lost,the process of our community healing has begun.

Today a new astrological chart was published. In one full sweep, the astological signs of many people changed. For example Capricorns became Sagittarians,and in my case, I changed from being a Sagittarian to a new 13th sign called Ophiuchus, which wasn't all that bad, less stubbornness and more wisdom, but a little late in my case though!

New Zodiac sign dates are necessary because for some time now people who assume they are Capricorns are really Sagittarians. A phenomenon called “precession” has moved the Zodiac signs nearly one month to the west in the sky since they were created about 600 B.C. Precession is caused by gravitational forces from the moon and the sun on a bulge in the Earth at the equator. These forces cause the orientation of the Earth’s axis of rotation — what we think of as the poles — to wobble like a spinning top losing momentum. This wobble traces a cone in a cycle that lasts about 26,000 years. During this cycle, the traditional North Star eventually becomes invalid and the Zodiac signs shift. When I grew up, I must admit that I didn’t have any choice about writing thank you notes. For my parents, thank you notes represented good manners, and was a gracious way of expressing gratitude for gifts received.

Today, however, thank you notes seem to be moving in the same direction as dinosaurs. Perhaps, this is because of technological changes in our society. Nevertheless, I guess I do believe that thank you notes are a very effective way to connect with people in today's technology filled world. For me good manners never go out of style, and not writing and not acknowledging a gift is not acceptable. What do you think?

It was just announced that President Obama and first lady, Michelle Obama will be visiting Tucson on Wednesday to pay tribute to the victims of last Saturday's mass shootings.

Later that day, the President will speak at a memorial event at the University of Arizona. The event is being titled, "Together we Thrive:Tucson and Arizona." The event will include an American Indian blessing, a moment of silence, a poetry reading and a presentation of a chain featuring messages from the public.

By now, everyone has heard or read about the tragic events that occurred in Tucson this past Saturday morning. Six people were killed, and many more were wounded. Congresswomen, Gabrielle Giffords, who is now in critical condition, had just returned from Washington D.C to conduct one of her frequent "Congress on your Corner" events.

One little girl, who was killed in the mayhem, had just been elected to her student council and was very interested in politics. All she wanted was to meet Congressman Giffords at the local grocery store and to witness how democracy worked first hand . As a youngster, this little girl had always been interested in politics. Her birth date of September 11, 2001 no doubt helped to inspire her interest in politics. She was also one of the 50 9/11 babies featured in a book called "Faces of Hope."

Our community is cloaked in sadness for all of those who were killed, injured and terrorized this past Saturday. Vigils and prayer services are being held throughout the community.

While it isn't clear what motivated the 22 year old suspect, it is somewhat apparent from reports that the suspect was a very trouble youth. While we may never know if extreme political rhetoric was in any way a contributing factor for Saturday's shooting, it nevertheless calls for some soul searching on the part of everyone.

As one paper editorical suggested, "it would be a positive consequence of this atrocity if we used it to start treating one another with greater civility. It is, in fact, the responsibility of all citizens to help create through responsible words and deeds a safe harbor in which American politics and robust debate can occur free of fear."

The 2011 New Year was welcomed in Tucson with snow in the mountains and freezing temperatures on the valley floor.

Few people think of snow and skiing when they think of Tucson. The Santa Catalina Mountains, however, is home to the southernmost ski area in the United States. The ski slopes are located just an hour's drive from the sun-drenched resorts of Tucson, where area visitors can go golfing, swimming and downhill skiing in the same day.

Today, I spent some time with Baby Iris, who was helping her mom with cleaning and vacuuming around the house. While there, Baby Iris noticed the new baby crib that was assembled in the Master bedroom yesterday. Of course, she needed to try it out! After awhile, she returned to her special vacuum cleaner, which simulates a vacuuming noise while playing the alphabet or musical songs.

Well today, I barely escaped the throngs of shoppers in the local grocery store, and when I finally finished my purchases, my ear caught the singing and playing of Christmas songs by Salvation Army members. They are such a wonderful organization and do so much for people in the community.

Tomorrow, I am hosting a Christmas brunch. Much of yesterday was spent planning, preparing and organizing the final menu. Besides quiche, fruits, breads, bacon and sausages, a shrimp tray, I created a new dish, which I'm calling "Stebbino ginger and lime marmalade meatballs," which I would like to judge as very tasty, but on that note, my family members will need to decide tomorrow. Merry Christmas everyone!

At about 12:31 AM Tuesday morning, December 21st, we will all be treated to spectacular lunar eclipse here in Tucson and across Arizona. While lunar eclipses are not uncommon, it is uncommon to have an eclipse at the same time as the Winter Solstice, actually the first time in 372 years.

So stay up a little later this evening and then look skyward in the early morning hours at about 12:30 AM and you should have a view of one of nature's most beautiful spectacles: a total eclipse of the moon.

My good friend Jim in his TENNIS TOUSAN blog reminded me the other day that Winter had definitely arrived in Minnesota. Here in Arizona, the changes in season are not as apparent or dramatic; no snow, no ice, or below zero temperatures. While there is frost on some evenings, the only real change is the need for one to prune back summer plants, which I was doing this week on the flower beds that dot the rock retaining rock wall that surrounds. Nevertheless, Winter will arrive officially on Tuesday, December 21st at 4:31 Mountain time here in Arizona.

Had great fun with Baby Iris this evening as my daughter and husband attended their former neighborhood Christmas party. Time was spent decorating the tree, eating clementines, singing songs and reading nursery stories in front of a beautiful fire in the fireplace. It wasn't long before Baby Iris was sleepy and had visions of sugar plums dancing in her head. I guess Baby Iris is one person who enjoys Grandpa's singing and I know she is looking forward to having a new baby sister in late January.

When I woke up this morning, I heard some noises outside the bedroom window. When I went to investigate, I saw about 7 or 8 Javelinas eating the pods from underneath one of my mesquite trees. The Javelinas are actually collared peccaries. While pig like, they are not, nor are they ferral hog or wild boar.

While true pigs originated in the Eastern Hemisphere, the collared peccary is native to the Western Hemisphere and ranges from Argentina to the southern and western parts of the United States. The peccary, is by genus an even toed Ungulate and if we go way back is a distant relative of the hippo.

Peccaries in many ways are like having wild pigs in the desert, but unlike pigs they are quite gregarious and travel in herds of 10-20 and are very interesting. Their main source of food is the prickly pear cactus and the roots of other plants, plus grubs. As a group they mark their territory by way of their sweat glands.

Perhaps my blog absence has been noticed, perhaps not, but for the past two weeks, I have felt like "hammered dog meat", almost literally. It all started when I boarded an early morning flight from Tucson to the Twin Cities of Minnesota on Thursday, December 2nd. From almost the moment I arrived, I had the worst cold, fever and sore throat that I could ever remember. Doing anything was out of the question, and hot chicken soup, plenty of fluids and tea were the order of the day. By the following Wednesday, after a visit to Urgent Care, I was back in the air, ending a trip that was really cut short by illness. Little did I know, however, that I left "Dodge", just in time, because what followed was one heck of a blizzard and snowstorm in the Twin Cities. In fact, the snowfall was the 5th largest on record. Since returning, my life is quietly returning to normal. My congestion and cough are gone, and I am blissfully enjoying temperatures almost 80 degrees warmer. In fact, Tucson had a record temperature of 84 degrees today. It was with this nice weather, that I did take some time to hike and climb in Saquaro National Park which is near my home.

The weather here in Palm Springs today was just perfect, sunny skies, no wind and temperature in low 70's. Started the day with a nice walk and then exercise on the treadmill at the fitness center. What followed was tennis with my son Chad and his fiance, Gina. The photos represent a view outside our Condo at Shadow Ridge and some lovely pictures of pink flamingos.

The Grand kids were introduced to Bocce Ball, spirited tennis was played by Piano Man and Desert Princess, and croquet t urned out to be great fun. All the while, Baby Iris looked on with great interest. As a tennis player, I was also impressed with the well manicured grass courts.

Yesterday afternoon was spent in the pool and what a good time we had. Piano Man and Desert Princess talked Grandpa into a water game called "Sharks and Minnows". I was designated the Shark, and the object was for the shark to catch the minnows. Now, the pool was the largest I had ever seen, for me it seemed to be an ocean, because I was one exhausted shark by the end of the afternoon. In the meantime, Little Baby Iris, only 18 months was absolutely enjoying the water as one can see. And wow did Piano Man like the those giant water canons.....shot me down at least twice!!!! For tomorrow.....we will be on to Bocce Ball, Croquet, Tennis, Frisbee, and perhaps Horseshoes. Sounds like the old Shark can have a rest!!

The El Tour de Tucson is held annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving and is one of the largest cycling events in the country. The El Tour is a fun ride attracting over 9,000 cyclists of all ages and abilities from throughout the United States and beyond, consisting of novice, intermediate, advanced, and professional riders.

Cyclists enjoy El Tour and its festivities simply due to their passion for cycling, while others choose the event as part of a healthy lifestyle change or even as part of their wellness program as a survivor from cancer or other life-threatening illness. Many are attracted to El Tour’s fundraising programs for its many charitable agencies, for which the event raised over $1.8 million dollars in 2009. What all riders of El Tour share is a desire to get on their bikes, meet great people and have a fun time doing it!

Participants may cycle 109, 79, 66 or 40 miles, plus the 6, 3 & 1/4- mile Diamond Children’s Fun Ride, open to all abilities. Main routes expose participants to scenic areas of Tucson, with beautiful vistas of its local mountain ranges - three rising over 9,000 feet- complete with the backdrop of the mighty saguaro cactus, icon of the Southwest’s Sonoran Desert. The Fun Ride offers an exciting 6-mile route, highlighting the many special cultural aspects of downtown Tucson. Course profiles can be rolling to moderately hilly, though the 40-mile route is basically flat and great as a family affair or for beginners! Two often dry but sandy river crossings will greet 109-mile riders, while 79 and 66-mile cyclists experience just one. No crossings for 40-mile participants. Yesterday, with beautiful weather in the mid 70's, I took time out to hike Sabino Canyon, which is a significant canyon located in the Santa Catalina Mountains and the Coronado National Forest north of Tucson, Arizona, USA. Residents and visitors alike find Sabino Canyon a popular recreation area that provides a place to walk, hike or even ride a tram, or for some push a stroller. Wildlife in the canyon includes deer, javelina, skunks, tortoises, rattlesnakes, mountain lions and a great variety of bird life.

Tucson, Arizona is located 2,467 feet above sea level. The city is located at 32.23 degrees north latitude and 110.92 degrees west longitude. Like all desert climates, cooling can be quite dramatic during the evening and night hours, especially as late fall and winter approaches. Tucson is no exception and this week the evening temperature has dipped down into the 30's with frost warnings. With that, flowers and herbs have needed to be covered most evenings. An added enjoyment, however has been gearing up using my outside jacuzzi. With the low light ordinance in Tucson (due to observatories) shooting stars, and even space stations are quite prominent as they move across the sky.

Unlike other states, only Arizona and Hawaii do not observe "daylight savings time." The only exception is on the Navajo reservation in Arizona, where "daylight savings" time is observed. I'll never forget the time that I was late for an early school meeting on the reservation due to this peculiarity. Thus, all states during the second week of November join Arizona on their respective standard time, Arizona being on mountain standard time.

When the sun was setting this past evening, the sunset was spectacular as the last rays of the suns settled on the red tile roof of my home. How beautiful!

Charlie Daniel, my grand nephew, arrived on October 23rd, at 2:10 AM in the morning. Charlie was a whopping 10 lbs 8 ounces. Both mom and Charlie are doing fine. What really is nice is that Charlie was named after his great-grandfather, my father, who I know would have been very honored by the gesture.

Here in Tucson, my favorite ice cream is Blue Bunny Ice Cream. Perhaps I'm special to this brand partly because of my family roots to this small town in Northwest Iowa.

While doing genealogy work their this week, I visited the Blue Bunny visitor's center in Le Mars and took a number of photos which are shown in this blog. I've also provided a brief thumbnail sketch of the origins of ice cream which I found interesting. Seems that Marco Polo discovered much on this trips to the Orient!

Americans’ love affair with ice cream is centuries-old. The origins of the frosty treat reach back to the first centuries B.C., when, as the story goes, ancient Persians and Chinese stored ice to serve it with honey, rosewater or nuts. Furthermore, during Roman times, emperors sent their runners for mountain snow, which was then flavored with fruits and juices and enjoyed.

Legends about ice cream’s history abound: In the 13th century, Marco Polo brought the first ice cream recipe to Europe after his trip to the Far East, and the Italian royalties fell in love with the dessert. Italian Princess Catherine de Medici brought the treat to France when she married King Henry II. In England, Charles I paid his cook a handsome sum to keep the recipe a state secret.

Most of these tales cannot be supported. Yet, it is true that over time the ice cream recipe evolved and spread throughout the continent. In the 17th century, the dessert became publicly available in Europe, and it is believed that in the 18th century the recipe crossed the Atlantic with European settlers.

Official records in the New World indicate that presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson developed a sweet tooth for ice cream. By 1813, ice cream became a state dish and was served at the second inaugural ball for President James Madison. As restaurants became more popular in the 19th century, ice cream became a favorite indulgence. Ice cream parlors and soda fountains spread as well.

When I saw this sign as I approached Abilene, I was reminded of a more quiet and respectful time in American Politics. Certainly a contrast to the current elections across the country this Fall and yes, what an irresistable campaign slogan, which most of that generation remember in "I like Ike.".

Dwight D. Eisonhower (1890-1969) was born in raised in Abilene,Kansas, and I was fortunate to have a guided tour of his family home where he was brought up with his five brothers. I also visited the Eisonhower Library and Museum where his growing up years, army years, presidential years and post presidential years were all documented.

Right around the corner from where my son lives in Denver is Old South Pearl Street. Here you will find unique shops and excellent dining. This whole area is marked my many homes that date back to the early decades of the 1900's. While this area declined during the 50's it was re-vitalized during the 80's and 90's and is now a favorite among the locals.

One regular event that goes from April through October is a Farmers market that is held on old South Pearl Street. The photos that are part of this blog show the variety of vendors ranging from fruit and vegetable stands to home made pies, to re-doing cane chairs to hand made baskets and even how one can adopt a rescue pet.

Yesterday on my drive from Tucson to Denver, I couldn't pass up a stop in Hatch, New Mexico, Pepper capital of the U.S. My goal was to buy some cooking peppers for my son,Chad who is a fantastic gourmet chef in his spare time, just one of his many talents. The name of the shop where I purchased the peppers is called 'Chilie Fantatic. As you can readily tell, the chilies come in multi colors and include a variety of shapes. They are just so colorful!!Now I just can't wait for my son's cooking, but first we need to go out for some good Thai food this evening.

"Grandchildren leave Tucson for their new home in Phoenix"

This week, my daughter and grandchildren moved from Tucson to Phoenix. While I'll miss dropping in at swim meets and soccer matches and other events on a moments notice, I now have the opportunity to take extended trips to their new home in Phoenix which is only 100 miles away. As my daughter told me, "Grandpa is always welcome and we now have five bedrooms, and one is there for you."

Over the weekend, I shadowed the moving truck and had the opportunity to take few photos of the backyard, which included a swimming pool, a water slide, a basketball court and a play area for little Baby Iris. Nearby, I also discovered beautiful parks and water features, with green grass no less!

"Neewollah, a Special Celebration."

Did you know that Neewollah is Halloween spelled backwards and now is taking place in a number of communities across the United States, from Oregon to Kansas to New Jersy,

Today, for example the Neewollah festival in Independence, is the largest annual celebration in Kansas, and actually dates back to the end of World War I and the year 1919. It was then that community members decided that they wanted to have a healthy alternative to the destructive vandalism that was being caused by Halloween pranksters each year. Thus Neowollah was born!

Today, with the help of many volunteers, Neewollah is alive and well in many communities. In the Kansas community of Independence for example, these activities are week long and include not only a rodeo, but also many new activities including fun runs, a bike race, a carnival, a chili cook off, band competition, professional performances, musicals, a kiddie parade and even a Queen crowning contest.

When your a Midwest Minnesota transplant like me, you can't cross off the first week in October without craving the first bite of a snappy fresh apple, all crunch and tang. And any apple is better when you've picked it yourself right off the tree.

What many people don't realize is that one can pick apples in Arizona, just like one can in the Midwest. The Apple growing region of Arizona is in the Southeastern area of the state near the town of Wilcox. With an elevation of nearly 5000 feet, this area has been producing quality apples, pears, and peaches for some time.

As a youngster, I still remember all the many apple items we had like apple butter, apple sauce, apple cider, apple crisp and apple butter. With a cellar in our basement, hardly a weekend went by when my entire family didn't gather around a favorite TV show and enjoy buttered popcorn and crunchy apples as a special treat.

October was also a time of pumpkin picking and decorating as well as some wonderful trail rides under a Harvest Moon! When you reminisce, what special memories do you have?

"35th Annual St. Demerios Greek Festival in Tucson"

As the Greeks say, kayi orexi-good appetite-and pame na glendisoume-let's celebrate at the Greek festival. For this past weekend, the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church open their arms and invited all Tucsonians and Arizonians to share in their culture.

There was so much to enjoy at the Tucson Greek Festival this weekend. There were live bands, dancing and exquisite food. There were also cooking demonstrations, lectures and classes for one to watch and learn the dances of Greece.

As a participant each year, I also looked forward to the wonderful deserts like Baklava, which is a Phyllo pastery layered with walnuts, sugar, cinnamon and topped with honey syrup. Another favorite is the Kouramibedes which is like shortbread buttered cookie dusted with powered sugar. Still another are the delicious Loukounades, which are deep fried and doughnut liked, and then dipped in honey. For the more adventuresome, their is the Ouzo cake, which is a lightly spiced walnut cake flavored with Ouzo Liquor. All very good!

"Roasting Green Chilies, A Southwest Tradition!"

This past weekend, a Chili Fest was held at a local Farmers Market not far from my home. While there was the normal vegetable produce stalls one would expect on a Saturday morning, this day was special in that Chilies were being roasted, a three piece band was playing, pony rides were provided for the kids and many artisans were showing their wares. Everything was very festive, and also very well attended.

The Green Chili that is used in the roasting is a cross between a bell pepper and a jalapeno and is about 6" in length, with a flavor that can range from mild to hot.

The roasting of the Chili is done within a large metal cage that goes around and around over medium high flame until the peppers begin to blister. Once this happens, the skin is peeled back exposing the delicious green flesh of the chili pod. About 50 pounds of chilies are done at a time.

Today, our family celebrated Piano Man's 11th birthday. Being the voracious reader he is, Piano Man's greatest desire was to receive a Kindle for his birthday. Upon opening his gift, Piano Man was absolutely on cloud nine when he discovered that his fondest wish had come true. Once opened, Piano Man amazed us all, by being on line and downloading books within a half an hour. During this process, Baby Iris looked on with great amusement, while entertaining us all with her own special personality.

"The Barrel Cactus commonly called the Fishhook Cactus"

On the three acres around my home, there are a number of Barrel Cactus which are now flowering. This particular cactus is usually the last to flower during the summer. The flowers are yellow to orange in color are up to 3 inches wide and grow around a ring around the top. In one of my photos, you'll see a multi-head Barrel Cactus, which is rather unusual. The name Fishhook comes from the fish like spines that are found on the cactus. These cacti are very hardy, and can live up to 130 years and can go without water for an extended period of time, because of the large amount of water the cactus can store. In fact there is one report of one barrel cactus surviving 6 years after being taken out of the ground!

While many cacti have beautiful flowers, the Night-blooming Cirrus is special in that it blooms only for one night during the late summer. A beautiful flower about 4-5 inches across opens up as night falls, then closes forever with the first rays of the morning sun. My photos were taken at 11:30 in the evening.
